Gow (1817) notes: "The musical world is much indebted to this Gentleman for his successful labours in rescuing from oblivion many beautiful native Airs that must ever be dear to the Scot & the Highlander in his work entitled The Airs & Melodies peculiar to the Highlands of Scotland."
