OLD ROAD TO GARRY, THE. Irish, Reel. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composed, originally in four parts, by accordion player Paddy O'Brien of Newtown, Nenagh, County Tipperary. Garrykennedy, explains Seamus Connolly, is a small village (affectionately called 'Garry') near Portroe, County Tipperary. The area is famed for its music, and O'Brien played sessions in the local pub, Larkin's Bar. The road below it (the "Old Road") goes to the neighboring village of Portroe. says that the opening bars of this tune were inscribed on O'Brien's gravestone in the Garrykennedy cemetery. O'Brien composed it in the key of 'C', although 'D' versions are also played.
