OPEN THE DOOR TO THREE [1]. AKA and see "[Winifred's Knot]]." English, Country Dance Tune (6/8 time). The tune and country dance instructions were printed by London publisher John Playford in the second edition of The Dancing Master (1652, p. 110) as "Winifred's Knot", with the alternate title "Open the Door to Three." It was retained in the long-running Dancing Master series through the sixteenth edition of 1716, then published by John Young, heir to the Playford publishing concerns. Beginning with the third edition (1657) the title becomes "Open the Door to Three" and "Winifred's Knot" is dropped. A distanced version was printed by John Oswald in his Caledonian Pocket Companion, Book VII (p. 27), and Oswald's version was entered into the 1788 music manuscript copybook of Norwich, Connecticut, musicians John and William Pitt Turner.
