PATRICK O’NIEL. English, Jig (9/8 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The melody appears in the music manuscript copybook of fiddler John Burks, dated 1821, attributed to “Goulding 1822” (a photocopy is in the possession of the ed.). Burks also attributes another tune to Goulding, “King George’s Welcome to Ireland.” Unfortunately, nothing is known of Burks, or to whom Goulding may refer, although there was a music publisher named Goulding in England in the early 19th century. Burks may have been from the north of England.
