BLACKSMITH O' BOTRIPHNIE, THE. Scottish, Reel. F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by the great Scots fiddler-composer J. Scott Skinner (1843-1927). According to the University of Aberdeen's J. Scott Skinner site, the composer appended a note in the right margin of his manuscript indicating 'The Blacksmith of Botriphnie' was '*The coming Centenarian'. Another Skinner piece, a companion strathspey called "Peter Laing--the Elgin Centenarian", seems to provide the reference for his 'Blacksmith' title. It is possible, according to the Aberdeen site, "that Laing had worked at Botriphnie House, Banffshire, a 'shooting-seat' [sporting estate] for Admiral Duff' in the 1840s."
