PIPER ON HORSEBACK, THE. AKA and see “Mist on the Mountain (1) (The)," "O'Connell's Reel.” Irish, Reel. A Mixolydian (‘A’ part) & D Major (‘B’ part). Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The tune was played in a set with "Merry Harrier's (The)/Mick Hoys/Jig Away the Donkey" by County Donegal musicians Frankie Kennedy (flute) and Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh (fiddle) on tour in America in the mid-1970's. "Piper on Horseback" sometimes appears as "Jig Away the Donkey" (a different tune) via a mistake on a record label, as sometimes happens with paired tunes in a medley. County Fermanagh musician Eddie Duffy learned the tune as "O'Connell's Reel," from the playing of William Carroll.
