GRANT'S RANT [2]. AKA - "Grant's Hornpipe." AKA and see "Chester Castle (1)," "New Hornpipe, "Recruit (The)." English, Country Dance Tune (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune was first published in Charles and Samuel Thompson's Compleat Collection, vol. 3 (London, 1773), however, another edition of the Thompson collection gives the title as "Grant's Dance." In manuscript form it appears in the 1779 copybook of fiddler George Malecot (Whitehaven, England), the 1770 manuscript collection of Northumbrian musician William Vickers (as "New Hornpipe" with the alternate title of "Grant's Rant"), and the 1798 manuscript of fifer John Miller (Strabane, Londonderry), where it appears as "Grant's Hornpipe." James Kerr published it around 1880 as "Recruit (The)."
