DOWN THE ROAD [2] (WENT POLLY). English, Polka. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. A dance adaptation of an English Music Hall song, written and composed by Fred Gilbert, and popularized by singer Gus Elen, who recorded it in 1899. The song is an ode to a costermonger's pony. Popularized by the London-based English 'revival' band Flowers and Frolics in the late 1970's (the name of the band is taken from rhyming slang).
