Annotation:Mellonie's Jig
Back to Mellonie's Jig
MELLONIE'S JIG. Scottish, Jig. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Gow (1806) identifies the tune as Irish, and indeed, the tune shares the same 'A' part as O'Neill's "Maloney's Wife" and Ryan's "Maloney's Fancy." Gow's title, "Mellonie's" would seem to be a corruption of the name "Maloney's". Edinburgh publisher Neil Stewart printed a "Melonies Jigg" in his Select Collection of Scots English Irish and Foreign Airs Jiggs & Marches (1788), but it would seem to be a different melody. See also the version in Northumbrian musician William Vickers 1770 manuscript under the title "What do you think of her now?"
