Attributed (in Davie's Caledonian Repository) to Aberdeenshire fiddler-composer biography:William Marshall, renowned for his strathspey compositions. It was published earlier in Edinburgh by Nathaniel Gow c. 1812 in a flute anthology.

Dalkeith Fair was an annual cattle fair, held after harvest-time.
