PENNY ON THE WATER. AKA and see: "Italian Schottische (The)," "Seven Step Schottische," "Up in the North." English, Hornpipe (4/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The tune was played in 1943 by the Dorset Trio (Kingston, Dorset) under the title "Italian Schottische (The)," although the association with Italy may be spurious. The melody was used to accompany the dance The Seven Steps, and was the vehicle for the children's song "Penny on the Water."
