BRAES OF ATHOLE, THE. AKA and see "Athol(e) Brae." Scottish, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDD (Alburger, Bremner, Gow): AABBCCDDEEFF (McGlashan). Northumbrian musician William Vickers' version of "Athole Brae" differs in detail but not in outline, notes publisher Matt Seattle. The melody was first printed by an anonymous publisher in 1734 in the Duke of Perth MS., written by David Young. Glen (1891), however, could only find the earliest appearance of the tune in print in Robert Bremner's collection.
