RUTLAND'S REEL. Bluegrass, Breakdown/Reel. A Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABCBDDEEDDB. Part of the tune is from fiddler Robert “Georgia Slim” Rutland (1916-1969) who obtained it from his grandfather's fiddle book and used it as a show tune; other parts were added by Howdy Forrester, who named the whole for his mentor. The first strain is similar to that of blackface minstrel James Buckley’s "Dar's Sugar in de Gourd," which appears in Ryan’s Mammoth Collection and Cole's 1000, and which may be the original source for the tune.
