ERIN'S GROVES. AKA and see "Castlecomer Lasses (The)," "Down the Groves," "Gay Fellow's Favourite (The)," "Good Fluter (The)," "Green Fields of Erin (1) (The)," "Green Groves of Erin (1) (The)," "Groves of Erin (The)," "Heather Breeze (The)," "Low Highland (The)," "Mary in the Mall," "Miss Shaw's Reel," "Miss Stewart of Grantully (2)," "Padaí Bhilli na Rópaí's Highland," "Queenstown Lasses (The)." Irish, Reel. G Major ('A' part) & A Dorian ('B' part). Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The earliest recorded appearance of the tune is in Church of Ireland cleric James Goodman's mid-19th century manuscripts. Goodman (1828-1896) was an uilleann piper, and an Irish speaker who collected locally in County Cork and elsewhere in Munster. He also obtained tunes from manuscript and printed sources. Joyce obtained the melody from the Pigot collection. Goodman's version is identical to the one later printed by Joyce.

Source for notated version: James Goodman [Shields].

Printed sources: Joyce (Old Irish Folk Music and Songs), 1909; No. 725, p. 361. Shields/Goodman (Tunes of the Munster Pipers), 1998; No. 95, p. 41.
