DAVID EARL OF CASSIL'S REEL. Scottish, Reel (cut time). G Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Glen (1891) finds the earliest printing of the tune in Ayrshire fiddler-composer biography:John Riddell's 1782 collection (p. 21). The Earl of Cassilis at the time of publication of Riddell's second collection was David Kennedy, 10th Earl of Cassilis (c. 1734-1792), a Scottish peer who in 1777 rebuilt Culzean Castle, a vast manor situated on a cliff on the Ayrshire coast near Maybole. Lord Cassilis never married, and the baronetcy became extinct on his death.
