MARIA'S FROLIC. AKA - "Maria's Frolick." English, Jig. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody first appears in Charles and Samuel Thompson's Compleat Collection, vol. 3 (London, 1773), later printed by James Aird in his second volume of Selections of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs (Glasgow, 1785). Manuscript versions can be found in the 1780 copybook of fiddler John Fife (of Perthshire, although portions of the manuscript may have been written at sea), and Northumbrian musician William Vickers' collection, begun in 1770. In America the jig was printed in G. Gilford's Gentleman's Pocket Companion for the Flute or Violin (New York, 1802).
