CAPE BRETON MARCH. Scottish, March (whole time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The composition is attributed to "Mc.--42nd Regt." in Glasgow musician James Aird's 1803 volume. The 42nd Regiment--The Black Watch--had been stationed in the Americas from the period of the French and Indian War and took part in the American War of Independence. Following the end of the war in America, the 42nd were posted to Nova Scotia in 1783 and served there until 1786 when they moved to north to Cape Breton. The regiment returned to Britain in 1789.
