FLIGHT, THE. AKA and see "Mutual Love (1)." English, Jig. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody appears in several printed collections of the latter 18th century, including Charles and Samuel Thompson's Compleat Collection of 200 Country Dances, vol. 4 (London, 1780), Niel Stewart's Select Collection of Scots, English, Irish and Foreign Airs, Jiggs & Marches (Edinburgh, 1788), and James Aird's Selection of Scotch, English Irish and Foreign Airs, vol. 2 (Glasgow, 1785). Thompson also published in a 1777 volume under the title "Mutual Love (1)." In addition, "The Flight" appears in several musicians' manuscript collections in both Britain and America. It can be found in John Fife's music book (Perthshire, Scotland, 1780) and the Hardy family manuscripts (early 19th century, Dorset). In North America, it was included in Elisha Belknap's commonplace book (Framingham, Mass., 1784), Henry Beck's flute manuscript (1786), and Thomas Molyneaux's flute music copybook (Shelburne, Nova Scotia, 1788).
