MUSIC CLUB, THE (An Ceolchumann/Music Society, The). AKA and see "Belles of Tipperary (2)," "Braes of Auchtertyre (1)," "Ceolchumann (An)." Irish, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Breathnach (1963) says the name refers to Ceolchumann Naomh Mhuire (St. Mary's Music Society) in Dublin, from whose members he obtained most of the tunes in his Ceol Rinnce na hÉireann I. The tune is better known as "Belles of Tipperary (2)." Fintan Vallely, writing in his Companion to Irish Traditional Music, identifies the St. Mary's society or club as a group formed in 1956 around a core of musicians from Sligo/Leitrim who had moved to Dublin. Later the group was called the Church Street Club. The session continues today at Hughes's Pub in Chancery Street. Original "regulars" were flute player John Egan, John Brennan, Dessie O'Connor, Tom Mulligan, Bill Harte, John Ryan, John Kelly, Sonny Brogan and John Clarke. The session nurtured such as Tony McMahon, Peter Browne, Barney McKenna and Tommy Peoples.
