SHELAH O'NEAL. Scottish, Slow Air (6/8 time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. "Composed and communicated by Mr. Boswell of Auchinleck" (Gow). Nathaniel Gow refers not to James Boswell (1740-1795), the 9th Laird of Auchinleck, Ayrshire, anemensis to Dr. Samuel Johnson’s in addition to being an author and diarist, and lawyer. Rather the song is the work of his son Alexander, himself a lawyer and a poet. It may be that the father did compose the reel “Honorable Mrs. Leslie Cumming.”
