OLD LIBERTY. American, Reel (cut time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABB. "Old Liberty" is from the repertoire of Franklin County, north-central Kentucky, fiddler Kelly Gilbert. The title references the tune "<incipit title="load:newliberty" width=850 link="https://tunearch.org/wiki/Liberty (1)">Liberty (1)</incipit>" but they are quite different melodies. Fiddlers often used the adjective "old" or "old-time" with a tune name to identify a tune in their repertoire that may be different but perhaps reminiscent of the usual one. In this case, "Liberty" (called "New Libery" by Kays) is the more widespread and commonly known tune, while "Old Liberty" seems unique to the playing of some north-central Ky. fiddlers such as Kelly Gilbert and Everett Kays. Gilbert was recorded in the field in Franklin County and Kays was recorded in Anderson County by collector John Harrod, both in June of 1978.
