{{font|text=BROWN MALLET, THE. Irish, Air (2/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Irish musician and researcher Paul de Grae finds the song in John O'Daly's (1800-1878) Poets and Poetry of Munster (1849, 1860) as "The Plug of Tobacco" (Smachdaoin Crón). O'Daly explains that the title refers to a stash of tobacco, the end result (like a 'dime' of marijuana) of extensive smuggling networks for tea and tobacco in Munster in the mid-19th century to avoid crushing excise taxes.
