A recording of "Emma - valssi" was first released in Finland in 1929 as a song of betrayed love, with traditional melody and words byVäinö Siikaniemi, and became a big hit. It soon became popular in Sweden, and among Swedish and Finnish immigrants in the U.S. It has since become known in various traditional dance communities in the U.S. and other countries. It is usually played in D minor, B minor, or A minor.
