BILLY IN THE LOWGROUND [2]. American, Reel. USA, West Virginia. A Major. AEae tuning (fiddle). A version of "Billy in the Lowground" by West Virginia fiddler French Carpenter. On a 1963 recording Carpenter can be heard saying that the "old-timers" he knew considered "Bonaparte's Retreat (1)" and "Billy in the Lowground" as companion tunes that were often played together, and that older musicians in his area played "Billy in the Lowground" in the 'Italian key' (i.e. AEae tuning). Carpenter also played a version of "Bonaparte's Retreat," usually in DDad tuning, in the same AEae tuning.
