It was perhaps inspired by the number of Irish immigrants to the United States in the mid-19th century and their quick enrollment in the Democratic party. In New York, the political machine of William H. "Boss" Tweed's Tammany Hall's organization was particularly adept at securing the support of recent Irish immigrants.
