AABB.The tune appears in a number of 19th century published and manuscript collections under a bewildering variety of titles, but usually set as a hornpipe. It would seem to have an English provenance, or at least appears earliest in English collections, but it can be found in Scotland, England, Ireland and North America. A year prior to the 1908 J.W. Pepper publication as "Pretty Kate," a hornpipe setting was published by Francis O'Neill in his Dance Music of Ireland as "Clover Blossom (The)." It seems likely that O'Neill obtained the tune (but not the title) from one of the earlier Elias Howe publications.
