Johnson (1984) states the tune was composed by an anonymous fiddler undoubtedly in the autumn of 1787, to celebrate the opening of the South Bridge, a twenty-two arch structure that spanned the Calgate Valley. The tune is adapted from an earlier melody by oboist William Fraser (1760-1825), "Haddington Assembly (The)" by which title it was printed by the Gows.
