ST. BERNARD WALTZ. Scottish, English; Waltz (3/4 time). The St. Bernard’s Waltz is a rather elementary couple or ‘sequence’ dance that was quite popular in the 1930’s, and for several decades thereafter. Its popularity has diminished in modern times, although it is sometimes still called for at Scottish ceilidh dances. "St. Bernard's Waltz" is attributed to Douglas Swallow, a bandleader who held forth at the Locarno, a dance hall in Streathan, a southern suburb of London. The Dancing Times of January, 1937, quoting the London Star, called "St. Bernard": Nov. 30, 1936.

...an ingenious yet simple combination of the Blues, Fox-trot, Veleta, and old-fashioned Waltz, with a tempo slightly faster than the last named. This description bears an asthonishingly close resemblance to the 'St. Bernard' of the North but starts with the wrong foot.
