TAILOR'S FANCY, THE. AKA and see “Ambrose Moloney's,” “McCabe's Reel (1),” “Tommy Whelan’s No. 4.” Irish, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune was recorded in the mid-20th century as “Ambrose Moloney’s Favourite” by east Galway flute player Eddie Moloney (-1980). Ambrose was Eddie’s brother, also a flute player, and both sons of Stephen Moloney of of the 1930's era Ballinakill Céilí Band. Ambrose himself was a member of the Leitrim Céilí Band (named not for the county of Leitrim, but for a townland in east County Galway) when they won the All-Ireland Senior Céilí Band competition in 1962. Fiddler Séamus Connolly was also a member of the band at the time, and learned the tune from Ambrose (recording it in 1993 with accordion player Paddy O'Brien and Charlie Lennon on piano).

“The Tailor’s Fancy” title does not appear attached to the tune until fiddler Cathal Hayden’s eponymous 1999 album, and may refer to Stephen Moloney, whose was one of a generational line of flute players and tailors in the family.
