The title is one of several in Quebec used quasi-programmatically to denote a conversation between a man and a woman, or, perhaps more commonly, and argument between the two. Researcher Jean Duval finds that in J.A. Boucher's 1927 unprinted precursor to his 1933 collection, the tune is called "Vieux et vieille", a title Duval says is more often associated with 'disputeuse' versions. The third strain is reminiscent of "Ronfleuse Gobeil."
