BUCKWHEAT BATTER [2]. American, Canadian; Jig (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune is often credited to Don Messer, whose mid-20th century recording of the tune helped to popularize it in Canada and the United States. However, the tune was recorded in 1926 by Tom Owens WLS Barn Dance Trio for Gennett records (with dance calls), and would appear to predate Messer's playing.
