BARD'S LEGACY, THE. AKA and see "Legacy (1) (The)." Irish, Air and March (6/8 time). C Major (Howe): G Major (Holden, O'Farrell). Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The tune was printed by Dublin publisher Smollet Holden in his Collection of Quick and Slow Marches, Troops, &c. (c. 1805), as "The Bard's Legacy," a title that suggests a lyric (now lost) was set to it. Holden, however, categorized it as a march. Thomas Moore set words to the tune and called his song "The Legacy," by which title the tune has appeared in numerous collections.
