TRIP TO CASTLE HOWARD, A. English, Country Dance Tune (cut time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDD. The melody appears in Charles and Samuel Thompson’s Compleat Collection of 200 Country Dances, vol. 4 (London, 1780). The melody also was entered into the 1798 music manuscript collection of north Yorkshire fiddler Joshua Jackson (1763-1839).
Castle Howard is a stately manor residence in North Yorkshire, built between 1699 and 1712 for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle to a design by Sir John Vanbrugh. It is familiar in modern times as the setting for the Granada television series Brideshead Revisited.
