LOCOMOTIVE, THE. English, Hornpipe. England, Northumberland. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. A 19th century hornpipe composed in the 'Newcastle style' by its main progenitor, Biography:James Hill, who probably named it after a pub, which itself may have been named for the locomotive works and railway yards in Newcastle. Hill resided in Gateshead, northern England (near Newcastle), for much of his life, but was born in Dundee, Scotland. The tune is usually played in the key of 'D' major.
