GIGUE À PHILIBERT, LA. AKA and see "Jument Grise (La)," "Reel de campagne," "Reel à Philibert (Le)," "Reel de Péribonka." French-Canadian, Reel. A popular Québec tune with variants under a number of titles (see note for "annotation:Jument Grise (La)") from the repertoire of fiddler Louis "Pitou" Boudreault [1] (1905-1988, Saguenay region), who played a 'crooked' or irregular meter version. The tune takes its title from the name of a step-dancer named Philibert, who would take over when his wife grew fatigued from step-dancing herself. A gigue in Québec is a stepdance, and the name attached to a tune simply means a vehicle for stepdancing, no matter what the meter.
