KERRY JIG [1], THE (An Port Ciarraíoch/Cairraige). AKA and see "Gearraltach Buidhe (An)." Irish, Jig (6/8) or Slide (12/8 time). A Minor (Joyce, Levey, O'Neill): A Dorian (Breathnach, O'Farrell, Sullivan). Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Joyce): AABB (Levey, O'Farrell, O'Neill, Sullivan): AA'BB' (Breathnach). A member of the "Behind the Bush in the Garden" family of tunes. See note for "Behind the Bush in the Garden (1)" for more. "I learned this jig in early days from hearing pipers and fiddlers play it; and it has remained in my memory ever since" (Joyce). The earliest appearance of the tune in print under the "Kerry Jig" title is in piper O'Farrell's Pocket Companion vol. 3 (c. 1808). Church of Ireland cleric James Goodman's mid-19th century music manuscript collection (Book 1) also contains the jig, appearing as "Gearraltach Buidhe (An)," with "The Kerry Jig" and "Yellow Fitzgerald" as supplemental titles. Goodman (1828-1896) was an uilleann piper, and an Irish speaker who collected locally in County Cork and elsewhere in Munster. He also obtained tunes from manuscripts and printed collections.
A variant of the tune appears as "Brady's Slide", attributed to the late Galway/London fiddler Lucy Farr, but it is clearly a cognate of "Kerry Jig."
