The melody, like many in Charles and Samuel Thompson's 1757 collection, first appeared in John Johnson's 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 7 (London, 1756). The first strain is similar to that of the air "White Horse (1) (The) in P.W. Joyce's Old Irish Folk Music and Songs (1909), who obtained the melody from scupltor wikipedia:Patrick_MacDowell. The Thompsons brushed off the tune and republished it thirty years later as "Savoyard's Frolic (The)."
