DONEGAL BOYS. Irish, Reel. The name Donegal is Gaelic for 'castle of the strangers,' although William Bradbury Ryan spelled it 'Donegall' when he printed the reel in Ryan's Mammoth Collection of 1050 Reels and Jigs (1883, p. 51). The tune was dropped sixty years later when 'Ryan's Mammoth' metamorphosed into Cole's 1000 Fiddle Tunes (1940). It appeared in The Devil's Box, vol. 21, No. 4, Winter 1987, p. 48.
