RIPON SQUADRON, THE. English, Quadrille (2/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABA. "The Ripon Squadron" is the first part (La Pantalon) of "The Yorkshire Hussars" set of quadrilles, consisting of five figures: "The Ripon Squadron,” “The Knaresboro Squadron,” “The Leeds Squadrion,” “The Harewood Squadron” and “The Tadcaster Squadron." They were published in 1822 by the firm of Goulding, D’Almaine, Potter & Co.
The Yorkshire Hussar Regiment of Yeomanry Cavalry was a militia unit formed in 1794 as part of the raising of troops for home defense against the threat of invasion from France. It was disbanded in 1802 after the Peace of Amiens, but several troops were subsequently reformed. From 1819 the regiment was under the command of Thomas Philip Robinson, 3rdBaron Grantham. Each squadron of the regiment is honored by the title of a quadrille part, which was composed by Andrew Roy, “Band Master & Leader of the Band” at the Ripon Assembly.
‘Andrew Roy’ may be one of two individuals, a father and son of the same name. The father (and the probable composer) was a violin maker who, on his passing at age 70 in 1845, was recorded by the Yorkshire Gazette as having been “master of the Yorkshire Hussar band, and was much respected by the musical portion of the city.” His son Andrew, a flutist, was a cabinet maker and also a member of the Yorkshire Hussar band. He and beloved, Elizabeth Meadley, died tragically in 1831 while crossing the river Ure upon returning from a dance. It seems that he had been evicted due to intoxication, and the couple were attempting to return to Elizabeth’s house. He was aged 27 when he died, making him age 18 when the quadrilles were published.
