CHICKEN IN THE BREAD TRAY. Old-Time, Breakdown. Sometimes an alternate title for "Soldier's Joy." However, this particular tune is similar to "Sally was a Poor Girl," another tune in source Munsey Gaultney's repertoire, played more slowly and 'with a few different notes'. Gaultney was a fiddler from Ashe County, North Carolina, recorded in the field by Blanton Owen in 1973, who was known for his shuffle bowing and timing. Also in his repertoire was "Turkey Buzzard" and "Walls of Jericho."

Recorded sources: Rounder 0058, Munsey Gaultney - "Old Originals, vol. 2" (1978).
