Tune properties and standard notation
HARLEQUIN, THE. AKA and see "Father Dollard's Hornpipe." Irish, Hornpipe. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The title "The Harlequin" is an alternate Sliabh Luachra title for the tune also known as "Father Dollard's Hornpipe." Paul Deloughery's note with the tune in his book says: "Harlequinn (sic) was a General in the British Army. This is (fiddler Padraig) O'Keeffe's version of it." There is some confusion of names of this tune with one called "Chancellor (the)," since both were played in a medley on recordings of Dennis Murphy and Julia Clifford. There are a number of melodies entitled "Harlequin," a name that is derived from the comic-theatre figure of 17th century Italian commedia dell'arte. Harlequin was originally one of the two Zannis or comic servants, although later he became the love interest or leading man.
