Tune properties and standard notation
HICKEY'S [1]. AKA and see "Ballydesmond Reel (The)," "Old Pensioner (The)." Irish, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Fiddler Seamus Connolly (2002) remarks that the tune was in the repertoire of County Kerry fiddler Paddy Cronin, who played it for Ciarán MacMathúna when he visited America in the early 1960s on a collecting trip for his radio program American Journeywork. Cronin told MacMathúna that he had learned the tune from Kerry fiddle master and teacher Pádraig O'Keeffe, who Cronin said always called the tune "Hickey's." According to Moylan (1994), however, the tune was learned in America from a fiddler named Hickey (Boherbue area) by west Kerry fiddler Denis Murphy, who passed it (and "Hickey's (2)") on in turn to accordion player Johnny O'Leary (Sliabh Luachra region of the Cork-Kerry border).
