FIELD MARSHALL, THE (An Toiseac-Sluaig). Irish, Hornpipe. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB.

Source for notated version: Chicago fiddler Edward Cronin, originally from County Tipperary. Cronin was a weaver, machinest, and composer and the source for many of O'Neill's tunes. O'Neill thought much of his musicianship and his envied his store of tunes, but seemed wary of him. "It was his open boast that he never forgave nor forgot an injury," records O'Neill, who at some point seems to have had a falling out with the sometimes tempermental fiddler.

Printed sources: O'Neill (Krassen), 1976; p. 190. O'Neill (Music of Ireland: 1850 Melodies), 1903; No. 1671, p. 311.
