Country Dance in Genii (The)
'COUNTRY DANCE IN GENII, THE. English, Jig. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Neil Stewart (Edinburgh, ) also prints a "Country Dance in Genii") in his Airs (1788) but it is a different tune. The Genii, or the Birth of Harlequin Annapolis: An Arabian Night’s Entertainment (1752) by Henry Woodward was one of several Oriental-themed pantomimes and other stagings that introduced romanticized characters and settings with magical transformations and Harlequin antics. The Genii was a hit and triumphed over rival productions, fostering a host of imitators.
