LARK ON THE STRAND [1] ("An Fhuiseog ar an Tra" or "An Fhuiseog 'sa Dumhach"). AKA and see "Droim Chonga," "Mulally's Jig," "Old Woman Lamenting Her Empty Purse (The)," "Paddy Hughes' Jig," "Stolen Purse (1) (The)." Irish, Double Jig. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The 'A' part struggles delightfully between G major and E dorian. Breathnach (1963) states this is a County Sligo version and title ("the original" according to "the people of Sligo") and identifies a "not very good setting" also printed in Irish Folk Dance Music (No. 137). The jig is similar to "Stolen Purse (The)."
Sources for notated versions: accordionist Sonny Brogan (So. Sligo/Dublin, Ireland) [Breathnach]; Brendan Mulvihill (Baltimore, Md.) [Mulvihill]; New Jersey flute player Mike Rafferty, born in Ballinakill, Co. Galway, in 1926 [Harker].
