COBURG, THE. English(?), Waltz. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. The tune is contained in the late 18th century McFadyen manuscript, p. 29. Coburg, Germany, was the home of Austrian-born Johann Strauss (the "Waltz-King") from 1887, when he was an older man. He moved from his native country because he could not obtain a divorce from his second wife, Angelika Dittrich, in order to marry his new infatuation. In fairness, Angelika had her own discretions, and was not a fervent supporter of his music. He not only moved out of Austria, but converted to Protestantism, and was duly re-married in Coburg's town hall a few months later to Adele, who encouraged him in his art.
