Raymond Francois (1990) relates the name Cherokis denotes not only the Indian tribe but also a small tree often used as firewood on the prairie. Related songs are Aldus Roger's and Don Guillory's versions of "Two-Step a' Comeaux." The “Midland Two-Step” is also a duple-time version of the melody.
