MAGPIE. Old-Time, Breakdown. USA, North Carolina (Piedmont region). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Silberberg): AABB (Brody, Kaufman). Collected by Eric Olson, Bobbie and Tommy Thompson in 1968, and even earlier by Alan Jabbour (1966, see Library of Congress AFS 13,036), from fiddle/banjo duo Harlan Coble and William Alonzo "Lonnie" Corsbie (Guilford County, N.C.). Tom Carter also collected a D Major version from Piedmont fiddler Earl Shatterly. The 'A' part of the tune is quite similar to that of "Evan's Hornpipe." The tune was very popular among young old-time musicians in the "revival" of the 1970's.

Source for notated version: Ruthie Dornfeld [Silberberg].

Printed sources: Brody (Fiddler's Fakebook), 1983; p. 181. Kaufman (Beginning Old Time Fiddle), 1977; p. 51. Silberberg (Tunes I Learned at Tractor Tavern), 2002; p. 96. Songer (Portland Collection, vol. 2), 2005; p. 123.

Recorded sources: Ken Perlman & Alan Jabbour - "Southern Summits." June Appal 028, Wry Straw - "From Earth to Heaven" (1978). Rounder 0010, "Fuzzy Mountain String Band" (1972). The Cedar Point String Band (Frank George, David O'Dell, Bob Roark).
