"Alfie's Hornpipe" is the original title for the tune, which was composed by Canadian Webb Acheson. Stacy Phillips transcribed it from the playing of North Dakota/Saskatchewan fiddler Joe Pancerzewski. Joe had heard Alfie Mhyre playing this tune, and didn't know the name of it, so he called it "Alfie's Hornpipe." He popularized the tune in the Pacific Northwest under the latter name.
