"Lilly of the Valley" was a song It was published in New York in 1847 by Jaques and Brother in an arrangement by E.P. Christy (1815-1862), the founder of the blackface minstrel group Christy's Minstrels. The lyric begins:

Away now darkies, away;
De horn am soundin de break ob day,
To work wid de shubble and hoe,
When your labor is done we'll away.
